DIY Energy Audit

While you may not have access to an infrared camera, fog machine or blower door, you can still better your energy usage. The U.S. Department of Energy has an online consumer guide to home audits that offers advice on how to track down drafts and check insulation, as well as replace heating and cooling systems

( eere.energy.gov/consumer).

Calculate your annual energy bill and see how much

specific upgrades will save you with the Home Energy Saver, a simple online questionnaire developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory ( hes.lbl.gov).

One more excellent resource is the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, which has a condensed online version of its “Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings” available at aceee.org/consumerguide.
